Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) is an academic insurance fraternity for students studying under an insurance, actuarial science, or risk management major. The fraternity promotes education and professional development among its members.

The new Gamma Mu Chapter was chartered during a special ceremony on Lansing Community College’s campus. The ceremony paid great tribute to the roots of the insurance industry, all the way back to merchant traders crossing Asia with their goods and wares. It also explained the meaning behind Gamma Iota Sigma’s emblem and coat of arms, which ties in some of the first fire marks used by the insurance industry.

Other Michigan universities and colleges with GIS chapters were in attendance to support the new chapter, including Central Michigan University, Ferris State University, and Olivet College. There was also a great showing of support from many Lansing insurance professionals. Keep an eye out for these Gamma Iota Sigma students – many attend MAIA’s Annual Convention.

Lansing Community College’s Faculty Advisor to the Gamma Mu Chapter is Mary Stucko. Founding students, Andrew Delessandro and Austin Elliot, will be taking leadership roles within the chapter. The Young Agents are always looking for opportunities to speak to students about the agency side of the insurance industry. Please contact Terri Bettinger, or one of the Committee Members, if you know of a class, or group of students, that would be interested in learning more about the insurance industry.
