Next Generation Stories: How I Found Insurance

Melanie Keusch
SENIOR, RISK MANAGEMENT AND INSURANCE PROGRAM, OLIVET COLLEGE

I heard a lot about Olivet’s amazing insurance program, mostly through a class I took as a high school senior. A teacher talked me into tak-ing the InVEST class so I could see what the insurance business was all about. I still wasn’t convinced insurance was right for me, but I ran with it – partly because I sensed it would be a path to a secure, career-oriented job. Read more ...

SENIOR/DOUBLE MAJOR, RISK MANAGEMENT AND INSURANCE PROGRAM FINANCIAL PLANNING PROGRAM, OLIVET COLLEGE

When I was in 10th grade, I got called to the counselor’s office. It wasn’t what you might think. She had noticed I had been taking ac-counting and that I was doing really well. She told me about a program being offered at the Genesee Career Institute for the very first time in risk management and insurance. She thought I might be interested. Read more ...

CLIENT EXECUTIVE, KAPNICK INSURANCE GROUP

I’ll admit. It was a fluke. No one in my family had ever been in the insurance business. When I was going to Flushing High School, my friend Andy told me about a program through the Genesee Career Institute. He was earning free college credit and attending classes on the insurance industry during school hours at Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Company. So I enrolled and attended classes there. After just one year, I had earned college credit for three classes and my AINS designation, too. Read more ...

CLIENT EXECUTIVE, KAPNICK INSURANCE GROUP

In high school, I had set my sights on being a teacher. I went to college right after graduating from Adrian High School. Everything went as planned until my senior year in college when I went to work for a school district. The more I spent in the classroom and in school administration, the more I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. I used to say that a career in the insurance industry was my plan B. But now that I’m working in insurance, I know it should have been my plan A all along. Read more ...

My parents have been in the insurance and financial industry since I was born. They never pushed me to go into insurance, and said I should explore my options. But I always wanted to be part of the family business, and found insurance to be a good fit. Read more ...

MARKETING SPECIALIST/AGENT, PHILLIPPO INSURANCE AGENCY

About a year and a half ago, a fellow firefighter asked me if I would consider coming on board with his insurance agency. He needed someone to step in to a marketing role and thought my background in scientific and technical communication was a good fit. I accepted and delved in as a marketing specialist. Read more ...

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT, ACTUARIAL SCIENCE, OAKLAND UNIVERSITY

It took me a couple years to figure out what I wanted to study in college. I was taking general education courses and reflecting on what I liked. In my first math class, there was a problem on the final exam that involved choosing resources to maximize saving lives after a natural disaster. That exercise really sat with me, and I knew then that I wanted to pursue mathematics and help people recover from unexpected disasters. Read more ...

GRADUATE, ALPENA COMMUNITY COLLEGE, ASSOCIATE IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
STUDENT, NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY, INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

I sold myself on the idea of being an entrepreneur at a very young age. Insurance seemed like a natural fit. My grandpa started his own insurance agency in Tawas, and my dad worked in insurance when he was younger. My uncle is still in the insurance business, and strongly influenced my college and career choices. Read more ...

GRADUATE, FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY ACTUARIAL SCIENCE / RISK MANAGEMENT

When I first started at Ferris, I was in the pharmacy program. I soon realized some of the things I was studying – like biology – weren’t my favorite. I still wanted to be in a field where I could help people. I like to research things and love math, so I switched to actuarial science. It’s a relatively new field of study here at Ferris, and I saw it was an area where I could connect with people, be of help, and provide a service – just like my parents have encouraged me to do. Read more ...

STUDENT, OLIVET COLLEGE, INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT

When I was in high school, I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, but I saw that my uncle owned an insurance agency and saw he was doing well. My family knew about the Insurance and Risk Management Program at Olivet, so they encouraged me to give it a try – especially if I liked what I learned through Eaton RESA. I was also motivated to study insurance since I had earned nine college credits through the high school program. That gave me a great head start at Olivet and put me on track to graduate in just three years. Read more ...
